The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State has strongly criticised the APC-led administration of Governor Ahmed Aliyu over its failure to pay civil servants’ salaries on time, leaving many workers in distress.
In a statement signed by the PDP’s publicity secretary, Hassan Sahabi Sanyinnawal, the party expressed deep concern over the financial hardship caused by the continued delays, “which have now become the norm since the government’s late implementation of the national minimum wage.”
According to the PDP, “salary payments are now being delayed well into the middle of the following month, with some workers left unpaid from previous months.”
The party described this situation as unacceptable, especially given the substantial federal allocations the state receives.
“The PDP finds it deeply troubling that despite the large funds accrued to Sokoto from federal allocations, the state government reportedly resorts to overdrafts to meet its salary obligations. This raises serious concerns about financial mismanagement, particularly in the absence of any visible developmental projects,” the statement read.
The opposition party also condemned the government’s failure to pay February salaries, even as the holy month of Ramadan progresses, calling it an unprecedented hardship on civil servants.
“This is the first time in the history of Sokoto State that workers have entered the middle of Ramadan without being paid their wages. It is an unfortunate failure of governance that has left many struggling to meet their daily needs,” the PDP stated.
Furthermore, the party accused Governor Ahmed Aliyu of failing to fulfil his campaign promise of prompt salary payments, labelling the APC-led administration as “deceptive and irresponsible.”
The PDP called on the state government to immediately rectify the situation and ensure that civil servants and pensioners receive their rightful payments without further delay.
“The hard-working people of Sokoto deserve better,” the party concluded.
Efforts to get the reaction of the state government were not successful, as the state commissioner for information and orientation, Bello Sambo Danchadi, could not be reached at the time of filing this report.
