Passage of Olowo: Traditional rites commence in Owo, as Akeredolu mourns Olowo

Following the death of the traditional ruler of Owo, the Olowo of Owo, Oba Victor Folagbade Olateru- Olagbegi, activities were at the lowest ebb in the town due to the demise of the monarch.

Tribune Online observed the restriction of movement into the palace as unauthorised people were turned back by the security at the main gate of the palace.

All markets within the town opened for business except the popular Oja Oba market, known as Ulede market, situated within the palace, was closed down while traditional trees in the market had been cut as apart of traditional rites to mark the exit of the monarch.

Speaking on the demise of Oba Olateru-Olagbegi, the Personal Assistant to the late king, confirmed that the monarch died on  Tuesday night after a brief illness and said traditional rites for the late monarch has commenced in accordance with the custom and tradition of the town.

He, however, said there was no restriction on movement within the town but said the traditional market located within the palace had to be been relocated outside the palace until the installation of a new monarch for the town.

He also disclosed that no traditional or High Chief will put on their beads as a sign of respect for the departed soul of Oba Olateru-Olagbegi.

Meanwhile, the state governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, has described the passage of Oba Olateru- Olagbegi, as a huge loss to the state, saying the state had lost one of its most cerebral royal fathers who combined deep intellectual capacity with admirable traditional flamboyance.

Akeredolu, in a statement signed by his Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Yemi Olowolabi, said the late Olowo was a devout Christian whose reign ignited a remarkable revival of Pentecostal evangelism in the legendary palace of Olowo of Owo.

While condoling with the immediate family, the people of Owo kingdom and the entire citizens of the state, Akeredolu said the reign of the late monarch was peaceful and witnessed huge development.

The governor observed that in spite of the late monarch’s commitment to Christianity, the rich, robust and transcendental culture and traditions of Owo kingdom flourished under his leadership, just the same Owo witnessed unprecedented development and all-around peace.

The statement stated that “on behalf of the people of the state, we appreciate President Mohammadu Buhari, other state governors and indeed distinguished Nigerians from all walks of lives for their condolence messages and comforting calls over the loss of this great son of Ondo State.”
