The Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), the apex sociopolitical organisation of the Niger Delta, has celebrated the reappointment of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Describing her as a “shining star” and an exemplary ambassador, PANDEF expressed immense pride in her achievements and global recognition.
In a statement signed by its National Chairman, Dr. Godknows Igali, PANDEF commended Dr. Okonjo-Iweala for her indelible contributions to global economic governance. “Dr. Okonjo-Iweala exemplifies the indomitable spirit, resilience, and brilliance that define our people,” the statement read. “She is not only a beacon of hope for Africa but also a symbol of what is possible when talent meets dedication.”
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, a native of Ogwashi-Ukwu in Delta State, made history as the first woman and first African to lead the WTO. PANDEF highlighted her illustrious career, including her tenure as Nigeria’s Finance Minister and Managing Director of the World Bank. “Her first term at the WTO, despite coinciding with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, was marked by transformational leadership. She championed equitable trade policies and advocated strongly for developing countries,” Dr. Igali stated.
The forum described her as a trailblazer who redefines narratives about Africa’s capacity to lead on the global stage. “Her qualities of integrity, intellect, and unwavering commitment to global economic equity inspire not only the Niger Delta but the entire continent. She represents the transformative leadership our region is capable of,” the statement added.
PANDEF emphasized that her accomplishments inspire younger generations to pursue excellence. “Her story encourages young people to embrace courage and determination. She has shown that the Niger Delta is home to transformative leaders capable of addressing global challenges with innovative solutions,” Dr. Igali noted.
The forum pledged its unwavering support for Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s second term at the WTO. “We assure her of our prayers and support as she continues to lead with characteristic wisdom, determination, and a visionary outlook,” the statement concluded.
