A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mayegun Sunday Babanumi, has invested in the education of 20 indigent students in Ibadan Northwest and Southeast Federal Constituency with the yearly payment of the Senior Secondary School Examination fee.
Babanumi made this known at the declaration of his ambition to vie for the Ibadan Northwest/Ibadan Southeast Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives in 2027 at Onireke, Ibadan, at the weekend.
He said the gesture is aimed at cushioning the effects of the economic hardship on the respective parents of the affected students.
He also added that it is in support of the education policy of Governor Seyi Makinde, which is geared towards the reduction of out-of-school children in the state.
According to him, “The gesture is borne out of my desire to render assistance to the less privileged in society, irrespective of their religious leanings and the political affiliation of their parents.
“It is aimed at supporting the education policy of Governor Seyi Makinde of making the state number one in the education sector nationwide.”
On his political ambition, the party chieftain disclosed that it is borne out of service to his constituents.
His words: “Vying for political offices, to me, is all about service to the people, not to amass wealth. I have contested for the Chairmanship of the Ibadan Northwest local government in the past, but the leadership of the party prevailed on me to step down for another aspirant.
“But now, I have decided to contest the seat of Ibadan Northwest/Southeast Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives in 2027 to improve on the achievements of the present lawmakers.
“What is most essential as a lawmaker is the enactment of laws with a meaningful impact on the lives of the people, which I promise to do.
“Also, I will collaborate with the state government in driving home its various policies for the benefit of my constituents.”
