Oyo State government says that its investment in the state’s health sector has begun yielding benefits even as it granted four hospitals semi autonomous status to reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks associated with public services and promote better health services.
The four designated semi-autonomous hospitals are Adeoyo Maternity Teaching hospital; Ring Road State Hospital; State hospital Oyo and Saki Specialist Hospital.
Secretary to Oyo state government, Mrs Olubanwo Adeosun inaugurating the pioneer medical directors appointed for the four hospitals granted semi-autonomy, said this was to ensure that the hospital’s day to day running is smooth, offer faster and efficient services and support the government’s quest to make health services the best in the state.
According to her, “this is a pilot phase. It was like this about 25 years ago, but it fizzled out because the structures were not properly put in place. So, slow and steady, we will begin to expand as we achieve success.
“They have been given operational manuals; they will also be trained. The staff to support the medical directors have also been selected carefully to ensure those hospitals will be able to run efficiently and effectively.”
Chairman, Oyo State Hospital Management Board, Dr Gbola Adetunji said the semi-autonomous status is to be granted to all general hospitals and full autonomy to all specialist hospitals in the state even as they start to operate under similar regulations as Federal Medical Centres.
Dr Adetunji tasked the newly inaugurated medical directors to make their hospitals patient-friendly, reduce waiting time, provide prompt and effective care, ensure the attitudinal change from all categories of health workers, maintain discipline as well as address the problem of alternative power supply amongst others while being innovative in seeking intervention from philanthropic members of the public.
Head of Service, Alhaja Ololade Agboola who was represented by the permanent secretary, service matters, Mr Fatai Oladehinde and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr Mufutau Ayoola also cautioned the newly inaugurated medical directors to avoid any corrupt action that could tarnish their reputation.
Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association, Oyo State branch, Dr Ayotunde Fasunla lauded the idea of granting the hospitals semi-autonomous status as it will make healthcare system in the state better, assuring that the pioneer medical directors with the support of the other members of the healthcare team will make the state proud.
