The Oyo State Government has announced plans to begin enforcing the mandatory provision of waste bins in all residential and commercial buildings across the state from 1 September 2026.

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, disclosed this while addressing journalists in his office, stating that residents and property owners had been given one month to comply with the directive.

According to him, the initiative is part of the government’s renewed efforts to strengthen environmental sanitation and improve waste management across the state.

Aderinto said: “Every household, residential building, business premises, shopping complex and plaza must provide designated waste bins that are commensurate with the size of the building, the number of occupants and the volume of waste generated.”

He added that all residents and business owners must patronise only government-accredited Private Sector Participants (PSPs) responsible for waste collection and evacuation.

The commissioner warned that anyone found engaging unapproved waste contractors or disposing of refuse through unauthorised means would be sanctioned.

“Anyone found engaging unapproved waste contractors or disposing of waste through unauthorised means will face the full weight of the law,” he said.

Aderinto urged residents experiencing challenges with waste collection services, as well as those unsure of the accredited PSP operators in their areas, to report to the Oyo State Solid Waste Management Authority (OYOWMA) or the Department of Environmental Health Services in the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources for guidance.

He also disclosed that government enforcement teams would verify evidence of payment of waste evacuation fees during inspections.

“Residents and businesses are expected to remain up to date with their monthly waste disposal payments as part of the requirements for compliance,” he said.

The commissioner explained that the exercise was an extension of the state’s daily environmental sanitation initiative, stressing that compliance went beyond merely providing a waste bin.

“Having a waste bin and engaging an accredited PSP alone is not sufficient if the surroundings remain dirty,” he said.

Aderinto maintained that the enforcement exercise was aimed at promoting a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment across Oyo State.
