……Says survivors still carry scars of attack
Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring justice for victims of the June 5, 2022 Owo massacre in St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, where over 40 worshippers were killed.
Speaking at the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Akure, during the 15th Episcopal Anniversary and 35th Priestly Ordination of the Bishop of Ondo Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Jude Ayodeji Arogundade, Ayedatiwa described the Owo massacre as a dark chapter that survivors still painfully bear.
“We pray that the memories of the Owo victims be blessed forever. As we continue to seek justice for them, let us stand together against terror and all forms of criminality,” Aiyedatiwa said.
“In unity and love, we will find the strength to heal wounds, mend broken hearts, and ensure a safer Sunshine State.”
Recalling how the attackers invaded the church with rifles and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), the governor confirmed that suspects including Idris Omeiza, Al-Quasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, Abdulhaleem Idris, and Momoh Abubakar are now being prosecuted by the Department of State Services (DSS), following their arrest through federal–state collaboration.
Aiyedatiwa who commended Bishop Arogundade for his resilience and described him as “a beacon of hope,” lauding the Catholic Church for its roles in education, healthcare, and social development across the state.
On efforts to bolster security, he revealed that his administration recently procured 75 Hilux patrol vehicles fitted with modern gadgets while sustaining monthly logistics support to security agencies.
According to him, the measures have earned Ondo State recognition as one of the safest in Nigeria, which is in turn attracting new investments.
In his remarks, Bishop Arogundade expressed gratitude to the government and people for returning missionary schools to the church, assuring that they will remain committed to providing quality education and moral guidance.
Marking his 35 years in priesthood and 15 years as Bishop, he reflected on his journey in the ministry and urged newly ordained priests to remain steadfast in service to God and humanity.
He also appreciated the governor’s presence and pledged continued prayers for his administration.
