Over 3,000 traders are facing losses following the demolition of their makeshift shops at the Jimeta Modern Market in Yola.
The traders who operated these shops were given time to vacate and move their wares; however, many of them did not heed the instructions to leave.
During a recent visit to the market, where the demolition process is currently underway, traders were denied access. This action has been widely viewed as unjust, prompting calls for Governor Ahamadu Umar Fintiri to urgently compensate the affected traders.
Speaking with journalists, the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Isahya Dabiri, emphasized that the traders were provided with sufficient time to relocate their goods.
Stressing that the government want to return to the master plan of the market, “those that genuinely got the shops will not be affected”
“There will be no compensation for anybody,” he said.
Daniel Dangari, one of the affected trader said the government is not fair to them , adding that most of them paid for the space to the government with government receipt.
“I wonder why the government of the day is so insensitive to our plight, just before the end of the last administration, these spaces were advertised and we bought it but today we have been chased out from our shops”, this is unfortunate he said.
Chief Henry Okobieme, a business man who has a lot of lock shops in the Jimeta Morden Market in an interview said ” the government is only trying to return the market to it’s original master plan”
But noted that the government should also have a plan to relocate the affected persons or else there will be another form of criminalities in the state.
He advised the government to find a way to compensate those genuine owners of the make shift shops in the market.
Madam Nneka one of the affected persons could not hold herself as she complained that she paid for the space to the owner of the lock up shop where she erected her make shift shop but now she has nowhere to go.
“I sell preshable goods, all my goods are gone, where do I start from now with a family to care for”. This government is wicked, we voted for him now this how he will pay us, God is on the throne”, she concluded.
