Our VC appointment requirements stand, says UNIOSUN

The authorities of the Osun State University (UNIOSUN) Osogbo have insisted that the basic requirements for the position of vice-chancellor of the university would remain as published in the national dailies.

The Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr. Ademola Adesoji, gave this hint at the weekend as a reaction to complaints by some individuals that the university made publication of articles in science-biased journals compulsory among other conditions mandatory for applicants as a way of scheming certain scholars without such qualifications out of the race.

He said the university was not ambiguous in its requirements for the person who would become the next substantive vice-chancellor of the university and therefore the university is not in any crisis concerning the selection of a vice-chancellor.

He also said there was no basis comparing UNIOSUN with the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, which altered its own selection requirements to accommodate certain categories of scholars in medical fields who were hitherto excluded as both universities operate under different laws.

According to him, LASU is not UNIOSUN as the establishment law of UNIOSUN, Section A15 (subsection 3) specifically states that the person to be appointed a Vice-Chancellor of the university must be a distinguished scholar with outstanding academic and administrative records.
So, the person, he explained, must possess a doctorate degree and a professor of not less than 10 years standing.

“This means if there are going to be any changes, the law has to be amended first,” he pointed out.

While also noting that it is untrue that the university is deliberately set to exclude prospective candidates in disciplines such as Law, humanities, Education (Arts) and Social sciences from the race by demanding from applicants globally standard scholarly articles and journals, Mr Adesoji said such criterion is the world best practices and that UNIOSUN cannot afford to do differently.

He explained that was equally why the criteria that the university used for the office of the vice-chancellor in 2016 are no longer tenable for the same office this time around.

According to him, a lot has changed in the academic world between 2016 and 2021 and so also UNIOSUN has moved up in status and ways of doing things and therefore cannot be doing the same thing the same way over the years.

Mr Adesoji, therefore, urged people who are complaining about certain criteria concerning who fits to become the next vice-chancellor to desist from such and instead join hands with the university to make it a better brand.
