OpenAI announced on Wednesday that it will provide its ChatGPT Enterprise product to U.S. federal agencies for $1 over the next year, giving the federal executive branch workforce access to its technology at what it described as “essentially no cost.”
The move comes as the company continues to build relationships with lawmakers and regulators.
OpenAI also plans to open its first Washington, D.C. office early next year.
As part of the initiative, participating agencies will have access to OpenAI’s advanced models through ChatGPT Enterprise. For an additional 60-day period, they’ll also be able to use features like Advanced Voice Mode.
The programme is being launched in partnership with the U.S. General Services Administration.
“Helping government work better, making services faster, easier, and more reliable—is a key way to bring the benefits of AI to everyone,” OpenAI said in a blog post.
In June, OpenAI introduced its OpenAI for Government offering and was awarded a contract worth up to $200 million by the U.S. Department of Defense.
The company is also in talks with investors about a potential stock sale that could value it at around $500 billion, according to previous reports by CNBC.
In March, OpenAI raised $40 billion at a $300 billion valuation the largest funding round ever secured by a private tech firm.
