The Joint Task Force South-South, Operation Delta Safe (OPDS), has called on the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and International Oil Companies (IOCs) to increase production to meet the federal government’s target of 2.2 million barrels per day.

Coordinator of the OPDS Joint Media Campaign Centre, Major Kayode Owolabi, made the call, citing a directive from the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, to end crude oil theft.

Owolabi reported progress in crude oil production and security in the Niger Delta, with daily output reaching approximately 1.7 million barrels per day. He acknowledged some incidents of vandalism but urged local and international oil companies to ramp up production and fully utilize pipeline capacity.

OPDS Commander, Rear Admiral John Okeke, implemented measures to achieve 100% flow in major pipelines, and President Bola Tinubu announced a resurgence in the oil and gas industry due to economic reforms, with oil production increasing to 1.61 million barrels per day in May 2024.

Nigeria’s crude oil production has been declining due to theft, but the OPDS is working to improve security and meet the production target.
