The vice chancellor of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Prof Ayodeji Agboola, has unveiled plans by the institution to commence degree programme in Criminology and Forensic Science.
This, according to him, is part of the university’s response to addressing the security challenges that have beset the nation.
He said approval for the programme has already been granted by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
He also spoke of plans to unbundle some of the programmes currently running in the university this year, including Mass Communication and Computer Science.
Agboola gave the hints on Wednesday in Ago-Iwoye while addressing a press conference to highlight the activities lined up for the university’s 32nd and 33rd convocation ceremonies, which began this week.
He listed 10 new programmes introduced by the university last year (2023), some of which include Estate Management, Building Technology, Quantity Survey, Applied Geophysics, and Library & Information Science.
Professor Agboola also spoke of plans to introduce, this year, Mechatronics Engineering and Industrial Engineering, among others.
Henceforth, beginning from this year’s convocation ceremony, he said graduates of the university will be issued their certificates immediately after convocation.
Two eminent personalities will be conferred with OOU’s honorary degree this year.
These are the Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remo land, Oba Babatunde Adewale Ajayi, Torungbuwa II; and Mrs Bello Olusoga, who will both be conferred with the Doctor of Science (DSc), honoris causa.
Giving a statistics of the granduands, Professor Agboola said a total of 76 earned First Class honours during the 2021/2022 academic session; 1756 in Second Class (upper division), 3203 in Second Class (lower division), 884 in Third Class, while 95 had the Pass grade.
In the 2022/2023 academic session, 98 earned First Class, 1536 Second Class (upper division), 2982 in Second Class (lower division), 651 in Third Class, and 51 in the Pass grade.
The Convocation Lecture, scheduled for January 31, will be delivered by eminent lawyer, Wole Olanipekun, entitled ‘Mass Exodus of Human Capital in Nigeria: An Anatomical Analysis of the Causes and Effects’.
