OOU inaugurates 3000-capacity ICT Building, others

AN iconic ultramodern Administration Building and a 3000-capacity ICT Building, said to be the biggest in the Nigerian university system, are among several projects that will be inaugurated by the governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on Friday January 31, 2020 as part of activities for the 28th and 29th convocation ceremonies of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Ogun State.

Three distinguished personalities: the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Hajia Zainab Shamshuna Ahmed (an alumnus of the university); the Olu of Ilaro, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, and Major-General Sansadeen Adebanjo Awosanya (rtd) will be awarded an honorary doctorate of the institution.

These were disclosed on Monday by the vice chancellor of the university, Professor Ganiyu Olatunde, while addressing newsmen on activities slated for the convocation.

The week-long programme began on Tuesday (January 21) with a three-day Agricultural and Engineering Show, and will continue tomorrow (Friday) with health walk, jumat service and novelty match. A convocation service is scheduled for Sunday (January 26) at the Chapel of Abundant Life, main campus of the institution.

A convocation play entitled Eniyan (written by Wale Ogunyemi) as well as film show ‘Not Yet a Full Stop’ by the Department of Mass Communication are scheduled for presentation at the university’s Pit Theatre and Otunba Gbenga Daniel Lecture Theatre respectively on Monday January 27, 2020.

The convocation lecture, ‘The Integrity Challenge in Nigerian Higher Education: Towards Creating a New Normal’ will be delivered by the provost of Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria (ACAN), Professor Olusola Akinrinade on Friday 31st January, 2020.

According to the vice chancellor, a total of 10,258 graduands will convoke. “8,800 of this number are first degree graduands, while 1,198 are graduands of the university’s various postgraduate programmes.

“A breakdown shows that there are 42 graduands that earned first class (honors); 1,436 in second class (upper division), 4,152 second class (lower division), 2,655 third class degree, while 287 graduated with pass degree.

“Furthermore, a total of 192 graduands will be awarded postgraduate diploma, 882 master’s degree and 124 PhD degrees.

Professor Olatunde revealed that the Finance Minister, Hajia Zainab Shamshuna Ahmed would be conferred with a Doctor of Science (honoris causa); Olu of Ilaro and paramount ruler of Yewa land, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle MFR, with the Doctor of Letters (honoris causa), and Major-General Sansadeen Adebajo, Doctor of Letters (honoris causa).
