Onitsha market fire: Police constitute tripartite committee

The Anambra State Police Commissioner, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has pledged to constitute a tripartite committee to determine the true cause of the inferno.

The CP made this announcement during an on-the-spot assessment visit to the scene of the incident at Ifijirika Street, Main Market Onitsha, on Monday.

He stated that the committee, which will comprise representatives from the police, the market leadership, and the state government, will be headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations, Mr Ezekiel Ibrahim.

He explained that the committee’s objective is to investigate the true cause of the unfortunate incident.

The CP urged traders to remain calm and to continue their normal business activities.

The Commissioner also monitored the Monday sit-at-home in the commercial city, during which he assured the traders that the command under his watch is fully committed to safeguarding the lives and property of all residents in Anambra State.

He further encouraged them not to allow the sit-at-home phenomenon to become a custom and tradition in the market or the state at large.
