One person has been confirmed dead and many houses razed down following a fight between the Ndieguzu Agalegu Omege community and Ukwuinyima both in Ikwo Local Government Area Ebonyi State.
The police spokesperson, DSP Joshua Ukandu confirmed the killing and destruction of property to journalists on Sunday.
According to Ukandu, two youths from the two communities fought and one of them from Omege was stabbed and he died later in hospital.
Ukandu, also noted that many people were injured after the suspected hoodlums attacked the community.
“His death led to members of his community attacking Omege and burning down some mud houses with thatch roofs.
“But Police mobilised and stopped them from inflicting further damage. The crisis has been curtailed at the moment,” he said.
The spokesperson said the Police is maintaining order in the area and has also launched an investigation.
He said the man who stabbed the dead victim has also been arrested.
A resident of the area who gave Tribune Online an account of the incident said the crisis was a result of a fight that happened in November 2024 after the burial of a woman raped and killed by unknown persons.
He then appealed to the state government to assist and return normalcy to the areas.
“More than 10 houses and property worth millions of naira have been burnt to ashes. The government needs to do something”.
However, Commissioner for Information in Ebonyi State, Jude Chikadibia Okpor, said the State is aware of the incident and is doing their best to control the crisis.
He said: “It was a misunderstanding between two youths from the villages you mentioned that degenerated into a free-for-all fight and resulted in the unfortunate incident.
“However, it has been brought under control.”
