One person was hospitalised as a result of fire outbreak on the 9th floor of the building of the North-West University’s city campus in Kano on Thursday.
The inferno affected the offices of the Head of Department (HOD) and lecturers in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) department.
However, a security guard trained in firefighting was rushed to the university clinic after inhaling smoke.
The Kano State Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service, responded swiftly to quench the fire.
While confirming the incident to our correspondent, Sani Anas, Director of the State Fire Service, attributed it to electric spark.
He however stated that firefighters managed to contain the flames before they could spread to other parts of the building.
Commenting on the incident, the Vice-Chancellor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa disclosed that while the fire had been extinguished, the full extent of the damage remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.
According to him, “We cannot ascertain the total loss at the moment, but we are grateful that no life was lost”.
Kurawa emphasised that the university enforces a policy requiring all electrical appliances to be turned off before staff and students leave, aiming to enhance safety, conserve energy, and reduce costs.
