The negative impressions created by so-called fashion statements have banished the essence of the message these days. Fashion campaigns and marketing largely takes place on social media, arguably more often than in the traditional media. One of the emerging fashion influencers in Nigeria is Delight Ushie, fondly known as Queen Light, an actress and content creator.
Queen Light’s first love was dancing since childhood, and it inspired her love for entertainment, so much so that she considered opening her own dance studio to impact others after attending one to sharpen her creativity in dancing. She later channelled her passion for fashion with the unlimited opportunities birthed by digital evolution through social media.
Queen Light is arguably one of the most genuinely creative content creators in Nigeria. She cuts it in her career sufficient enough to convince fashion brands to drive demand to their products through her profile. Fashion is a powerful tool to convey identity which the Cross River-born entertainer has used to convey messages of power in simplicity, acceptability and relevance in decency.
In an interview, Queen Light, one of five siblings, revealed that she holds a degree in Elementary Education from Cross River University of Technology in Calabar. She disclosed her belief that it is anyone’s right to portray how they want to see mirrored but she believes doing it in modesty holds a greater conviction.
“As a fashion influencer, I developed a clear vision for my brand identity. This vision emphasizes the power of fashion to showcase both style and beauty while remaining fully
clothed. I believe that creativity and elegance can be effectively communicated through a variety of outfit choices that don’t necessitate revealing clothing”, she said.
Speaking further, Delight Ushie said,
“This approach reflects my personal values and artistic preferences. It’s important to note that there is no single “right” way to approach fashion influencing. Some influencers may choose to incorporate partially nude imagery into their content, and that is a creative decision they are free to make. I however, have chosen to cultivate a brand that aligns with my own sense of style and comfort level”.
Like some of her colleagues, it was like finding oneself between a rock and a hard place for Queen Light, trying to convince her clergy parents about what she had chosen to do. But how she has gone about it, upholding her promise to them, have won her their unwavering support.
“My background played a role in shaping her creative journey. Hailing from a traditional African family with clergy parents, my initial career choices in dance, acting, and fashion content creation may not have been readily embraced. This is understandable, given the potential concerns about navigating the entertainment industry. However, I persevered.
” I communicated my passion and commitment to my parents, assuring them that I would maintain a positive and responsible presence within the creative world. My dedication and clear vision eventually earned their full support, allowing me to pursue my artistic aspirations,” she stated.
