Waheed was said to have committed the crime around 8:00 pm on the 25th February 2018, while conveying the victim and other passengers to Ilesha and Ile Ife, in Osun state from Akure, was arrested in Abeokuta.
Speaking on the arrest of the suspect, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Femi Joseph, explained that the victim and other passengers boarded the vehicle from Agbogbo area of Akure to Osun state but said while other passengers had highlighted from the vehicle at their various destination, the victim and driver were left in the car.
According to him, the driver suddenly veered into the bush and forcibly had a carnal knowledge of the victim at the side of the road after threatening the victim with knives.
He said suspect brought out knives to scare the young lady before he raped her and took some items which included: Ipad, handset, N40,000 and some other valuables from the victim.
He said the victim, a student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, approach the station to report the incident, saying upon receiving the complaint, detectives from the command swung into action and Waheed was arrested in Abeokuta, Ogun state.
“A search warrant was executed in the house of the suspect and one flash drive with a cover of the IPad belonging to the victim was recovered, while a Sharon space bus with registration KTU 989 CE which is the objective of the crime was also recovered,” Joseph said.
Speaking with journalists, the suspect who hailed from Iwo in Osun state, confessed to the crime, explaining that he was arrested with the aid of the phone he took from the lady, saying “it was the handiwork of devil”
The 30-year-old who said he is married to two wives said he has been driving for the past 13 years but said he regretted his action.
“I don’t know what came over me that day, I veered off the road and ordered the girl to get down and I raped her and collected her phone. I took her phone and I went to Abeokuta, which was my base before I was arrested.
“The detectives used the phone to track me because I started using her phone when my phone battery went flat. I never engaged in this type of crime in my life.”
The PPRO, however, said the suspect would be arraigned in court after the conclusion of the investigation.
