A two-day induction and orientation programme for over 2,000 newly recruited teachers for both primary and secondary schools in Ondo State has been concluded across six centres in the state’s three senatorial districts.
At the opening ceremony in Akure, the state capital, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa acknowledged the crucial role of teachers in improving education standards. He stated, “It is imperative to emphasise that your appointment is strictly to fill vacancies in our rural communities and to ensure that students across the state have access to quality education, irrespective of their location.”
Governor Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy, Dr. Olayide Adelami, added, “I have therefore instructed that anyone who declines a posting to where their services are needed should be shown the way out.”
Highlighting his administration’s achievements over the past year, the governor cited the construction and renovation of 121 classroom blocks, the procurement of 9,870 pieces of furniture for students and teachers, and ongoing infrastructural upgrades in secondary schools and technical colleges, among others.
He urged the newly recruited teachers to take their training seriously and perform their duties diligently. “We have put in place several monitoring teams that will visit schools to assess your regular attendance and performance in the days ahead,” he said.

The Chairman of the Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board, Victor Olabimtan, said the induction was held in collaboration with the National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), an institution renowned for empowering and building the capacity of education sector personnel.
In his address, Olabimtan reflected on the recruitment process and commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for prioritising education. He added that the state would continue to invest in education until the UNESCO-recommended teacher-to-student ratio of 1:25 is achieved.
“An induction programme like this is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in your profession. It’s a platform to learn, grow, and connect with fellow educators,” he said. “Teaching is not just a job but a calling that requires dedication, passion, and a commitment to shaping future generations. The responsibilities placed on you are significant, but with the right mindset and support, you will make a lasting impact on your students’ lives.”
Olabimtan also appealed to the governor to consider recruiting 500 teachers annually to address the teacher shortage in the state.
Representatives from various education bodies, including Mrs. Olanike Adams of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC); Mrs. Morayo Brown-Philips of the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM); the All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS); the Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON); and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), delivered goodwill messages, commending the state government for the initiative.
The Acting Director-General of NIEPA, Dr. David Shofoyeke, represented by Dr. Lara Ogunsola, Head of Training and Research at the institute, urged the new teachers to embrace their responsibilities with seriousness and strive for excellence.
“As educators, you are not just teachers but mentors, role models, and catalysts for change,” Dr. Ogunsola said. “Your dedication will shape the future of our society. Be proactive, innovative, and passionate about your work. The impact you make today will be felt for generations to come.”
Dr. Ogunsola, accompanied by Dr. Samson Oyeromi and the institute’s Media Head, Bodunde Tenabe, monitored activities at various induction centres, including St. James Mega Primary School, Akure; St. Patrick Mega Primary School, Ondo; St. Francis Mega Primary School, Owo; Salvation Mega Primary School, Irele; and Community Primary School, Okitipupa.
At each centre, Dr. Ogunsola reiterated the importance of the teachers’ roles in shaping students and society. She encouraged them to remain dedicated, passionate, and committed to excellence.
The induction programme was conducted in six centres located in Akure, Ikare-Akoko, Ondo, Owo, Okitipupa, and Irele, covering all three senatorial zones of the state.
