The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has said that the present state of education sector in Ogun State is worrisome, hence, needed urgent attention due to poor funding, moribund project, non-payment of deductions, unpaid salaries, controversial campus relocation and hasty appointments, to mention a few.
According to him, the best legacy of Ogun state years back was the education sector, which has been eroded by past education policies.
He promised a turnaround which includes investing heavily in education, increase in budget allocation on yearly basis for the sector to meet the 26 per cent UNESCO benchmark and implementation of the Universal Basic Education Act, as well as free education for all children of primary and junior secondary schools.
These are laudable steps if taken, especially his promise that welfare of teachers would be given priority in order to ensure best brains are attracted and retained in the system and upgrading and renovation of teaching facilities.
The governor should also not forget his commitment that Information Communication Technology (ICT) education would be made compulsory in all secondary schools.
Teachers’ education should be prioritised with increase in funding for teaching institutes and training, as well as retraining of teachers,
Adeniyi Akinbobola, Abeokuta.
