Omo-Agege: Senate ready to comply with court’s judgment ―Abdullahi

THE Senate says it will comply with the Federal High Court’ judgment setting aside its suspension of Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege.

It added that it would do nothing to stop the senator from resuming his duties at the National Assembly.
Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Sen. Sabi Abdullahi, stated this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

“As an institution that obeys the law and court orders, the Senate has decided that it will comply with the judgment of the Federal High Court and do nothing to stop Sen. Omo-Agege from resuming his office.

“This is pending the determination of the application for stay of execution,” Abdullahi said.
He said that since the Senate had filed an appeal against the judgment, it would wait for the outcome of the appeal before taking action.

“We have equally filed an appeal against the judgment of the court and a motion for stay of execution of the judgment at the Court of Appeal.

“Since the motion for stay of execution on the judgment shall be heard and possibly determined on Wednesday, we shall respect the subsisting High Court judgment and await the appellate court’s decision on the pending motion.’’

Omo-Agege had challenged his 90 legislative days suspension by the Senate over comment credited to him that the botched reordering of the 2019 elections sequence was targeted at President Muhammadu Buhari.

The court in its ruling on Thursday, declared the action as unconstitutional, saying that the Senate lacked powers to suspend a member beyond 12 days.
