The Old Students Association of Oyelagbawo Grammar School, Ilala, in the Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, has called on the state government to assist in restoring the school to its former glory.
Speaking with journalists in Ilorin on Friday to announce plans to commemorate the 50th Founders’ Day celebration and the official launch of the school’s alumni association, the Chairman of the 50th Anniversary Planning Committee, Mr. Nasiru Moronfola, lamented the dilapidated infrastructure and poor learning conditions in the school.
The old students, who expressed their commitment to supporting the school by addressing identified shortcomings, said that the association aims to partner with the state government to improve teachers’ welfare, particularly by offering incentives to alumni who may wish to return as teachers.

“We want the state government to take the lead by providing a well-equipped laboratory for the school. A situation where students sit on the ground to receive an education is not encouraging.
“We plan to provide accommodations for teachers and youth corps members to encourage them to stay in the area, renovate dilapidated classrooms to foster a conducive learning environment, and build new facilities such as science and entrepreneurship laboratories,” he said.
Mr. Moronfola also recalled how, in 1982, the school received a brand-new bus for its outstanding performance in agriculture and agricultural practices, adding that the school also received incentives such as cars, motorcycles, and free accommodation for teachers’ welfare.
“We hope to restore these benefits to make teaching and learning more rewarding,” he said.
Another member of the alumni association, Mr. Kola Adeyemo, cited the success of Government College Ibadan’s alumni association, which he said had transformed the school into a prestigious institution.
He urged the government to support Oyelagbawo Grammar School in a similar way, emphasizing the alumni’s dedication to helping the school regain its lost prestige.
Adeyemo noted that activities marking the 50th anniversary of the school would start on Thursday, November 14, 2024, including a church service, Jummah service, and a grand finale that will showcase the culture of the Ilala community on the occasion, among other activities.
