Okebukola calls for sensitisation of youths to curb copyright infringements

Former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Emeritus Peter Okebukola, has underscored the pressing need for comprehensive youth sensitisation initiatives to combat the rampant infringement of intellectual property rights.
Speaking at a sensitisation programme organised by the UNESCO Institute for African Culture and International Understanding (IACIU) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Professor Okebukola called for the need to equip young individuals with the requisite knowledge on the legal and ethical implications of copyright infringement.
Speaking on the theme of the programme, “Building a Culture of Respect for Intellectual Property: Youth Sensitisation on Copyright Infringement,” Professor Okebukola highlighted the programme’s pivotal role in raising awareness and nurturing a culture of reverence for intellectual property rights among the youth.
He expressed deep concern over the escalating prevalence of copyright infringement, particularly in today’s digital era, emphasising the urgency of proactive measures to address this challenge.
Professor Okebukola said: “This workshop serves as an invaluable platform for engaging our youths in substantive discussions and interactive sessions aimed at enlightening them about the legal and ethical ramifications of copyright infringement.
“By fostering a sense of responsibility and accountability, we empower our youths to make informed decisions and uphold the integrity of creative works.”
In his call to action, he advocated for intensified sensitisation efforts targeting the youth to underscore the significance of respecting intellectual property rights.
He stressed that as technology continues to advance, it becomes increasingly imperative to equip young individuals with a nuanced understanding of the importance of safeguarding intellectual property rights.
Professor Okebukola concluded by rallying stakeholders to collaborate in forging a future where creativity is celebrated, innovation is nurtured, and intellectual property rights are upheld by all members of society.
He urged collective action in fostering an environment conducive to the flourishing of creativity and the protection of intellectual property rights as essential pillars of societal progress and development.
