Ojukwu varsity inducts 142 graduates into Pharmaceutical Society

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam Campus, Anambra State, has inducted one hundred and forty-two graduates into the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, PSN.

In his opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Greg Nwakoby, said that without the support of the state government, there would not be the university and the faculty.

He explained that the establishment of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the institution was not an easy one and mentioned the various challenges he met on the ground on the assumption of office and how they were solved.

He appreciated Igwe Alex Onyido of Ogidi and Dr. Ifeanyi Okoye of Juhel Nigeria Limited for their contributions to the faculty in terms of donations of new buildings to the institution, the equipping of the e-library and laboratory, and facilitating the accreditation of the faculty.

The Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Professor Theophine Akunne, said that the graduates have been certified worthy in character and academics after having undergone intense training for five years and are well equipped to practise the pharmacy profession anywhere in the world.

Speaking on the theme of the event, “Welcome to a World of Opportunities and Possibilities”, the keynote speaker, Dr Ikem Odumodu, told the inductees that the pharmacy profession offers a wide range of jobs and career opportunities for talented pharmacists and charged them not to wait for opportunities but to create opportunities for themselves.

The Chairman on the occasion, Dr. Okoye of Juhel Nigeria Limited, described the profession as a very tempting one where one can ruin or prosper himself within a few months and expressed belief that they will abide by the rules and guidelines of the profession.

The Registrar, Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria, Pharm. Ibrahim Ahmed, on his part, noted that the inductees have toiled over the years to attain their present level and told them that as they fulfil other requirements of the council, like the one-year internship training, they should maintain high ethical standards in their practice. He also urged them to continue to improve themselves with lifesaving skills.

The Best Graduating Student, Pharmacist Cynthia Obikeze, in her valedictory speech, appreciated all that contributed to getting her and her fellow graduates to where they are and advised the upcoming pharmacy students to set goals and focus on achieving them.

The event that took place at the university’s auditorium was attended by the graduates’ parents, guardians, friends, family members, and well-wishers, including members of PSN from within and outside Anambra State and traditional rulers, among others.
