The apex Igbo sociocultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence, amidst allegations of abuse of office from some quarters.
In a statement by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Deputy President General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the group dismissed the claims as not only baseless but fabrications steeped in falsehood.
The group noted that the timing of these allegations was suspicious, coming hours after federal troops under Matawalle’s guidance successfully neutralised over 40 terrorists in Zamfara and Kebbi states.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo believed this suggests retaliation against Matawalle’s effective measures to restore peace and security.
The statement reads: “We make it clear that the Igbo communities scattered across the 19 states of the Northern region stand in solidarity with Dr. Matawalle. They express gratitude for his tireless efforts in utilising federal resources to combat the scourge of banditry that threatens our collective well-being. In light of this, it is imperative that Dr. Matawalle remains resolute in his focus, disregarding the antics and distractions posed by the unfounded allegations. These accusations are nothing more than booby traps intended to divert him from the noble pursuit of safeguarding the lives of all Nigerians, particularly the Igbo.
“The Igbo communities in the Northern region stand in solidarity with Dr. Matawalle, expressing gratitude for his efforts in combating banditry. Ohanaeze Ndigbo urges all Nigerians to remain vigilant against such political machinations and recognize Dr. Matawalle’s commendable work.
“We call on all Nigerians to unite in recognising Dr. Matawalle’s commendable work and ensure that the collective focus remains on supporting those who strive for the security and prosperity of the nation.
“The organisation urges all detractors to cease their disruptive antics and join the ranks of those committed to the greater good.”
