Ogun poly student dies of pregnancy complication

An HND student in the Department of Leisure and Tourism at the Federal Polytechnic in Ilaro, Ogun State, Miss Ajayi Abimbola Adejoke, has reportedly died.

Miss Abimbola, who died on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, according to the management of the institution, died of pregnancy complications.

On social media platforms, some students have alleged negligence on the part of the health officials in the Polytechnic’s clinic.

According to them, the deceased student died as a result of not being attended to due to her inability to produce a clinic pass.

Reacting, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Shola Abiala, disclosed that she died of a pregnancy complication.

In a statement titled “Re: Death of Miss Ajayi Abimbola Adejoke—The Truth of the Matter,” Abiara unequivocally described the social media posts as misleading, unfounded, and bogus.

According to him, the Polytechnic was not in any way liable for negligence, as all protocols were duly observed and relevant stakeholders notified during the course of the incident.

He also stated that the polytechnic’s clinic did all it could legally and ethically to ensure that Adejoke was given the best care possible up until her demise.

The statement read, “Our attention has been drawn to the unfortunate death of one of our students, Miss AJAYI Abimbola Adejoke, an HND student of the Department of Leisure and Tourism at the Polytechnic, who died as a result of pregnancy-related complications.

According to the medical report obtained from the Director, Medical Services of the institution (as attached), the deceased was rushed to the clinic from a practical class complaining of abdominal pains.

However, the reports going viral on some social media did not present the true picture of the sad and unfortunate incident.

The deceased was accompanied by her boyfriend to the clinic, and he confirmed that the late student was actually pregnant.

Realising that the clinic might not be able to treat the case properly due to its nature, she was quickly referred to a private hospital in the town and was conveyed to the said hospital in one of the institution’s ambulances, accompanied by a nurse and the boyfriend of the deceased.

Her parents were promptly contacted, and they reportedly came to Ilaro.

The Dean of Student Affairs of the institution, Dr J. O. Omowunmi, confirmed that the parents of the deceased had taken the remains of the deceased back home in the Polytechnic’s ambulance.

Inasmuch as the Polytechnic regrets the unfortunate incident and commiserates with the parents, it is pertinent to reiterate that the death of Miss Ajayi was not a result of negligence by the clinic as peddled, but as a result of pregnancy-related complications.

The Rector, Dr. M. A. Akinde, FCA, FCIT, on behalf of the management, staff, and students of the Polytechnic, hereby commiserates with the parents, friends, and classmates of the deceased and prays for the repose of her soul by Almighty God.”

Meanwhile, in a bid to unravel the circumstances that led to the situation at hand, Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Ogun JCC Axis, Comrade Adeyanju Oluwafemi, has promised to visit the Polytechnic with other representatives in order to meet with the school’s management and address various concerns.
