Ogun state has become the latest state to endorse former chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Lagos State, Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya (MC Oluomo), for the position of the union’s national president.
The chairman of the state council of the NURTW, Alhaji Mustapha Ismail (Yaro Ade), said Akinsanya was deserving of the top position, going by his antecedents.
With this endorsement, Akinsanya is poised to become elected as the next national president of the transport union.
Three other states where the union is in operation in the South West, Lagos, Ondo and Ekiti, had earlier expressed support for Akinsanya for the position.
Alhaji Ismail said the decision of the union members in Ogun State to back Akinsanya’s ambition was borne out of gratefulness.
“He did a lot to ensure that the NURTW returned in Ogun State. He was with us all through the challenging period. It is only normal to repay his good gesture with our support,” he said.
Alhaji Ismail said he had a high regard for the other contestant for the position, Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, but Akinsanya had done so much to earn the state council’s endorsement.
“The office of the national president of the NURTW has been zoned to the South West. It is not in doubt that all the four states where the union is operating in the region will queue behind Akinsanya,” he said.
The Ekiti State council had, last week, at an emergency meeting of state officers and branch/zonal chairmen, endorsed Akinsanya.
The council led by Chief Joseph Falope praised Akinsaya’s leadership, loyalty and commitment to public service, saying his endorsement for the top position was based on his ability to communicate effectively with people of all ages and backgrounds.
According to Falope, the Ekiti State NURTW is comfortable with Akinsanya’s leadership qualities.
Similarly, members of the union in Ondo State, including their chairman, Odudu Ademola, endorsed the candidacy of Akinsanya at a meeting held at the council’s secretariat in Akure.
Speaking after the meeting of state officers and branch chairmen, Ademola noted that due to Akinsanya’s leadership qualities that stood him out as a “worthy choice for the exalted position,” the entire officers and members of the union in the state had resolved to endorse him.
He said with Lagos State NURTW chairman in charge at the national level, there was going to be improvement in the union.
