Concerned indigenes of Ipokia in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State have sought clarification over the exact approved site for oil exploration in the state.

The indigenes in an open letter dated 23rd January, 2026, addressed to Governor Dapo Abiodun, said the community received the news with excitement that the federal government had approved Tongeji Island located within the local government for oil exploration.

In the letter signed by the Baamofin of Ipokia kingdom, Lawal Ajibola Orisadare, on behalf of the concerned indigenes, obtained by our correspondent, noted that the clarification became imperative following reports suggesting that the approved site for oil exploration may have shifted to Eba in Ogun Waterside.

They said that the change in narrative had left the people of Ipokia in a state of confusion and concerned about the true intentions behind these decisions.

The indigenes mentioned that the federal government, at different times, had shown visible interest in the oil deposits located in Tongeji Island, underlining their global significance.

While adding that the approval for exploration in Tongeji Island would not only secure the oil-rich island but also enhance the economic fortunes of the area, bringing with it numerous benefits for our country.

The concerned indigenes, therefore, appealed to Governor Abiodun to ensure that action is taken regarding the approval for oil exploration in Tongeji Island.

They insisted that the oil exploration should be concentrated on Tongeji Island while the deep-sea port project should be carried out in Ogun Waterside.

The letter reads, “As you are undoubtedly aware, oil deposits in Tongeji Island have long been confirmed to exist in commercial quantities. This resource represents an enormous opportunity for economic development in our region and for Ogun State as a whole.

The need to initiate oil exploration in Tongeji Island has become increasingly urgent. For many years, various administrations in Ogun State, from the military era through successive civilian governments, have recognised and advocated for the exploration of oil in Tongeji Island as a pathway to making Ogun State an oil-producing state. The historical consensus has always pointed to Tongeji Island as the focal point for these efforts.

“The discovery of oil in Tongeji Island has made the island particularly attractive to the Government of the Republic of Benin, which has reportedly made overtures to the inhabitants.

“This situation is a cause for concern, especially given the potential threat to our sovereignty should these overtures gain traction.

“The consistent presence of the Nigerian Navy on the island has been pivotal in maintaining security and supporting our local community against such external influences.

“This site has been recognised in the global context for its significant oil reserves, and it is crucial that exploration efforts remain there to ensure optimal benefits for our community and the state.”

The concerned indigenes urged the Governor to address the developmental needs of the council area, citing the abandoned Ogun State Polytechnic project established by the Senator Ibikunle Amosun’s administration.

It hinted that structures already constructed at the site are deteriorating despite numerous appeals for intervention from community stakeholders.

“It is particularly troubling to see that during your first term as governor, a delegation was sent, including the Honourable Commissioner for Works and the Honourable Commissioner for Housing, to evaluate the existing facilities for the polytechnic.

“Yet, as we approach the end of your second term, we find that no significant developments have taken place, and the facilities have been overrun by vegetation, reptiles, and other wildlife.”
