Ogun to demolish illegal structures on Lagos/Ibadan Expressway

In a bid to make its environment clean and attractive, the Ogun State government will soon commence the demolition of illegal structures and shanties on the corridor of the ever-busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

This disclosure was made known at a stakeholders’ forum on a programme tagged “Project Go: Green Ogun”, by the Commissioner for Forestry, Mr Kolawole Lawal, on Thursday, in Abeokuta.

Lawal said that the exercise would equally ease traffic congestion on the highway.

The commissioner said that market places, petrol stations, firms and shanties would paved way for the beautification of the highway, saying the 70 metres setback would now be most beneficial to road users.

He said further that the owners of the affected structures had been duly notified some months back.

Lawal said “Green Ogun project team was set up by Governor Ibikunle Amosun to deliberate and formulate plans that will help to solve problems of illegal parking and high traffic congestion being experienced along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.”

He added that the team, comprising of 18 members committee, was saddled with the responsibility of curbing activities that are detrimental to a healthy environment.

“The committee, which I chair, is also expected to beautify the road through activities like landscaping and tree planting.

“It will create access lanes and also construct barriers and ditches to prevent indiscriminate parking and illegal structure on the roadside.

“Other facilities for road users such as lay-bys or rest stops will also be provided on the highway,” he said.
