120 patients have benefited from the Ogun State Healthcare Outreach Surgical Mission, a pet project of the Wife of Ogun State Governor, Mrs Bamidele Abiodun.
The program is in collaboration with US-based organizations Naykas Healthcare Inc, ConnectDcare Inc, and Ajose Foundation.
The surgeries were carried out on patients diagnosed with Thyroid inflammation, also known as goitres, and anaemia during a 5-day free surgical mission at Olabisi Onabanjo Teaching Hospital in Sagamu, Ogun State.
A team of 30 medical doctors from Naykas Healthcare Inc, ConnectDcare United States of America, led by Dr Mufutau Kasumu, and Olabisi Onabanjo Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, led by Chief Medical Director Dr Oluwabunmi Tunwase, attended to the patients.
During her visit to OOUTH on Wednesday, Mrs Bamidele Abiodun expressed her delight over the large turnout and the impact the project has made on the lives of the people in the state. She emphasized that affordable healthcare is one of the key policies of the present administration in the state.
Mrs Abiodun revealed that the invitation of foreign medical practitioners, supported by the local doctors from Olabisi Onabanjo Teaching Hospital, aims to save lives, emphasizing the importance of health.
She stated, “Many patients have lost their lives in the past because they could not afford the outrageous medical bills. This has resulted in an increasing mortality rate nationwide.”
She further explained, “Ignorance has killed many people, especially in our villages. There was a particular girl from one of the villages in Ogun State who had a bruise on her leg but left it unattended until it later became cancerous. People need to be mindful of their health status by undergoing periodic medical checkups in hospitals and recognized health centres. This is the only way to reduce the mortality rate.”
Mrs Abiodun expressed her gratitude to the project partners, Naykas Healthcare Inc, ConnectDcare Inc, and the staff of Olabisi Onabanjo Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, for their contributions to the project’s success.
Dr Tomi Cokers, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, highlighted that the program is designed to assist indigent patients and urged residents to take advantage of the opportunity.
Dr Oluwabunmi Tunrayo Fatunwase, the Chief Medical Director of OOUTH, commended Mrs Bamidele Abiodun’s efforts in assisting indigent patients, emphasizing that the 5-day program will leave a significant mark on the state’s medical history.
She stated, “We had two sessions during the program, teaching and surgical sessions, with an average of 10 patients attended to daily.”
Dr Mufutau Kasumu, the lead doctor and representative of Naykas, mentioned that the program has been ongoing for the past 10 years, and he sees it as his way of giving back to society.
