The Ogoga of Ikere-Ekiti, headquarters of Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State, Oba Samuel Adejimi Adu, has proscribed all traders associations in the community.
The traditional ruler, who described as unacceptable the activities of the associations in the indiscriminate fixing of prices in the market, said traders should be allowed to fix their prices and trade freely without coercion in the market.
Speaking during a meeting with the Union of Sand Quarry Suppliers at his palace, Ogoga stressed that the Nigeria constitution guarantees freedom of association and that no individual should be compelled to join any trade group.
He explained that the complaints of the people over prices of some food items were unfortunate, threatening that anyone found culpable will be arrested and prosecuted.
“Any association that forces individuals to become members or fixes prices will face arrest and prosecution. From now on, all traders, whether dealing in sand, tailoring, pepper and vegetables, or any other goods, are free to conduct their businesses anywhere in Ikere and sell their goods at any profitable price. This is not about government; we cannot continue to see our people suffer,” the monarch said.
He also disclosed that meetings had been held with all market leaders and traders on the need to eschew the practice in the interest of the people.
“Authorities will ensure that these regulations are enforced, focusing on protecting the rights and liberties of every trader. Residents are further urged to report any breaches to the palace of Ogoga,” the monarch added.
The royal father called on traders and business owners to follow the directives and embrace the new era of open commerce in the community.
Oba Adu noted that the historic move was aimed, “to foster a more inclusive and competitive economic environment, encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation by removing mandatory association memberships to enhance individual freedom and promote a thriving economy in Ikere community.”
