Ogechukwu Clement Obiako: A visionary trailblazer in Telecommunications Engineering

For over two decades, Clement Obiako has been a driving force in Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape, leading transformative projects that have redefined connectivity and communication across Nigeria. His career is a testament to his expertise, leadership, and unwavering commitment to innovation, making him a respected figure in tahe field of telecommunications engineering.

A graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, with a degree in Electronic Engineering, Clement also holds a master’s degree in Oil and Gas Engineering from Robert Gordon University in Scotland. His academic background complements his practical expertise, which has equipped him with a multidisciplinary perspective on solving industry challenges.

He began his career in the early 2000s as a Field Engineer with GS Telecom, where he honed his skills in VSAT and microwave installations, preventive maintenance, and data transmission. This foundational experience prepared him for greater challenges, including a pivotal role with Suburban Telecom as a Network Supervisor. Here, he managed day-to-day operations of satellite hub stations and remote sites, carried out installations and testing of broadband circuits, and optimized transmission networks to meet customer demands. These early experiences solidified Clement’s ability to deliver robust solutions under demanding circumstances.

In 2003, Clement became a key player in Nigeria’s mobile telephone expansion, serving as Lead Engineer for the rollout of GSM services across 19 states in northern Nigeria. By implementing traffic backhaul services via VSAT technology, he enabled seamless connectivity between rural and urban areas, significantly increasing mobile penetration and transforming communication for millions of Nigerians. This project not only showcased his technical acumen but also highlighted his capacity to address complex challenges in underserved regions.

The following year, Clement led the development of international traffic trunking services, creating a cross-connect system between Nigeria and Telehouse London using private satellite links. This initiative facilitated the inbound and outbound transfer of VOIP traffic, enabling businesses to thrive through international prepaid calling card services and solidifying Nigeria’s position in the global communication network.

His leadership extended to digital transformation projects in the public sector. As Project Manager for the Nigeria Customs Service’s ASYCUDA implementation in 2007, he developed a satellite-based data transmission network to integrate customs operations nationwide. Similarly, he implemented a secure VPN for the Nigeria Immigration Service, enabling real-time transmission of passport data from international airports to a centralized database. These projects played a critical role in modernizing Nigeria’s public services, enhancing operational efficiency, and strengthening national security.

His contributions to the broadcast industry are equally significant. In 2008, Clement spearheaded the digitalization of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) network, transitioning it to satellite-based digital transmission for nationwide FM broadcasts. The same year, he led the deployment of a citywide WiMAX and GPON fiber-optic network in Abuja, providing internet access across the city and negotiating site collocation contracts to optimize coverage.

In 2021, Clement spearheaded the transformation of MTN Nigeria’s legacy SCPC satellite network as Project Director, leading cross-functional teams to implement the cutting-edge COMTECH EF DATA HUB solution. This overhaul significantly enhanced network efficiency and reduced satellite utilization costs by 50%. Currently, he serves as Project Director for the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) traffic backhaul initiative, where he oversees the delivery of innovative connectivity solutions for Nigerian telcos using a combination of terrestrial, satellite, and microwave technologies, further solidifying his role in advancing telecommunications infrastructure in Nigeria.

Clement’s impact goes beyond technical implementation. His ability to manage cross-functional teams, collaborate with stakeholders, and navigate complex negotiations has ensured the success of numerous high-stakes projects. His leadership style emphasizes strategic planning, innovation, and adaptability, enabling him to consistently deliver solutions that align with the rapidly evolving telecommunications industry.

Through his career, Clement has not only shaped Nigeria’s telecommunications infrastructure but also contributed to the broader digital transformation of critical sectors. From expanding mobile coverage to revolutionizing public services and optimizing corporate networks, his legacy is one of innovation, impact, and dedication to progress. Clement remains a beacon of excellence in telecommunications engineering, inspiring the next generation of professionals to push the boundaries of what is possible.
