October 1: Emulate sacrifice of past leaders, Gov Yusuf charges Nigerians

Kano Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has called on Nigerians, irrespective of tribal, religion, and other affiliations, to emulate the worthy sacrifices made by the country’s forefathers, with a view of uplifting the well-being of the nation.

He made this assertion on Tuesday, in commemoration of the 64th anniversary, held at Sani Abacha Stadium.

These men and women came from different regions, backgrounds, and walks of life, but they were united by a common cause: the liberation of our nation from colonial oppression.

Some of the notable, foremost, and influential figures whose names will remain indelible in the history of our great nation include Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto, Herbert Macaulay, and Anthony Enahoro, whose tireless efforts in advocating for self-governance and national unity laid the foundation for our eventual independence.

Their leadership and vision inspired countless others to join the struggle, turning the dream of freedom into a reality.

They were a symbol of courage, a voice of reason, and a guiding light during the darkest days of our colonial past.

Alongside them were other patriots such as Malam Aminu Kano, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief, Sir, Nnamdi Azikiwe and host of other nationalists whose fearless determination to resist colonial rule earned them the admiration of both their peers and the generations that followed.

They led non-violent protests, rallied the masses, and helped galvanize the spirit of nationalism that swept through the country in the years leading to our independence.

Their belief in the power of the people to change their fate remains a powerful lesson for all of us today.

Their struggles laid the foundation for a more inclusive society, where every citizen, regardless of gender, tribe, or religion, could have a voice and a stake in the future of our nation.

These heroes, and many more whose names may not be as widely known, gave their comfort and lives for the cause of our freedom.

They faced imprisonment, exile, and even death, but they remained resolute in their belief that a free and united nation was worth the price they paid.

As we stand here today, we owe them a debt of gratitude for their sacrifices, and it is our duty to ensure that their legacy is preserved and honored in our actions as a people.
