THE Obi of Ogwashi-Uku kingdom in Delta State, Ifechukwude Anishi Okonjo II, says the Obi-in-Council has provided, within one year,16 Hillux vehicles to security agencies and engaged more than 50 vigilantes to ensure adequate security in the area.
Seven of the vehicles were presented to the state police command, two to area command, two to the divisional polince officer and five to vigilante groups.
The monarch disclosed this to newsmen during 2024 edition of new yam festival celebration of Ogwashi-Uku community.
He said: “The Obi-in-Council also provided four transformers to the community in order to boost electricity supply to residents.
“We have just awarded N260 million contract to build Area Command of the Nigeria police in Ogwashi-Uku.
“The Obi-in-Council is building a new palace with the state of the art facilities in Ogwashi-Uku.”
He said further that the plan to build a technology centre for youths in the community was stalled by land grabbers who illegally sold off the land earmarked for the project.
He said the Obi-in-Council had repossessed the land through legal action, as the project will go on as envisaged. He added that the Obi-in-Council meant well towards the development of the kingdom.
On the new yam festival the monarch said:”The Iwaji festival is what we call the new yam festival, marking the beginning of harvest season or a new year for us.
“Our community is primarily an agrarian society and once you harvest your crops, especially yam, which is one of our major crops, we celebrate the new yam as a way of thanking God for what the bountiful harvest has given to our community.”.
