The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has lauded the visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu to Lagos, describing it as a significant and symbolic gesture that reaffirmed her strong commitment to grooming girls in leadership.
Speaking during the First Lady’s engagement with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and political stakeholders, which took place on Friday, Obasa expressed gratitude for her visit, noting that her presence brings a renewed sense of awareness and pride among Lagosians.
The speaker, while noting that one of key issue raised at the parley was leadership training for the girl child, said, beyond laws, there was need to intentionally raise the consciousness of girls in the country towards leadership and future responsibilities.
“It’s very good to have her back in Lagos. She’s always been our mother first as the First Lady of Lagos State and now as the First Lady of the Federation. Her visit, announced and well-organised, sends a clear message to all Lagosians that she remains committed to the state’s progress.
“One key issue raised was leadership training for the girl child. I agree completely. Beyond laws, we need to intentionally raise the consciousness of our girls towards leadership and future responsibilities. It’s an idea we’ll take seriously and explore where necessary,” he said.
On the girl-child issue, Speaker Obasa reaffirmed Lagos State’s proactive stance, citing existing legislation addressing rape, abuse, and child protection within schools.
Obasa commended the First Lady’s focus on developmental initiatives, including her emphasis on food security and poverty alleviation, as well as her outreach to traditional rulers, describing these efforts as aligning with constitutional responsibilities and community needs.
