As part of efforts to ensure transparency and accountability in government, the Oyo state chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has organised an event to present the Vice Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Air Force, Honourable Abass Adigun, to his constituents with a view to giving his stewardship.
Speaking at Mapo Hall, Ibadan at the event tagged “Meet Up With Your Representative”, Adigun expressed his joy for the platform provided by the NYCN to redefine representation and set the pace of transparency and accountability in government.
Adigun, who represents Ibadan South East/North East federal constituency in the National Assembly, stated that he was committed to the development of his constituency and the country at large. He maintained that he moved the motion of the welfare of Nigeria’s security agencies and that the motion presently awaits presidential assent. He said, “If the country takes care of our security agencies the more, they will be motivated to provide adequate security for us.” He added that he has other bills that would, if passed, make life comfortable for Nigerians.
Amid other national assignments, the law-maker said he has devised strategies that would impact his constituents positively in the areas of vocational training, empowerment, bursary and scholarship awards, infrastructure, free lessons for students preparing for certificate and matriculation examinations, and so on.
He pointed out that no development goal would be achieved unless the country invests in youths. He said, “I am aware that we will not be able to achieve any development goals to end poverty, to attain universal education, to improve health, to advance gender equality and create a sustainable planet unless we make smart investments in youths and partner with young people. If we fail to make these investments now, we will further entrench poverty and ignorance for generations yet to come.”
The chairman of the NYCN in Oyo state, Mrs Bobola Agbeja, said the lawmaker’s representation has been a blessing to the constituents, emphasising that his bills and motions, among other programmes, point to his love to serve. She added that Adigun has been responding to the needs of his constituency. She also revealed that there is a cordial relationship between him (Adigun) and his kinsmen. She also stressed that her organisation would strive to ensure that political office holders are responsive and responsible to the citizens.
Agbeja, therefore, charged the youths in the state to be focused, firm, and to defend the nation’s democracy and use their demographic advantage to improve democracy at all levels.
