NYCN gets new certificate of incorporation to end factional crisis

IN an effort to address the factional crisis bedeviling National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), the Council has gotten a new certificate of incorporation.

The certificate also reflects the appointment of new Board of Trustees BoT members drawn from the six geopolitical zones.

Speaking to newsmen on Wednesday at an emergency NYCN stakeholders meeting in Abuja, BoT member representing North Central Dickson Akoh, who is also the Commandant of the Peace Corps of Nigeria, said the development came up based on the judgment delivered by the immediate past Chief Judge of the Federal High court Abuja, Justice Ibrahim Auta.

He said the Judge among other recommendations ordered the amendment of the council’s constitution, conduct of a nationwide realisation exercise, hold a non-elective Congress among others.

He said this led to the emergence of the new BoT members.

They include: “Mrs Elizabeth Uyimen Ativie(Special representative), Dr Dickson Akoh(Northern Central), Marvin Yobana ( South-South), Alhaji Inuakpa Abdulkadir (sitting Minister), Dr Tank of Yakassai (North West), Alhaji. Billy Tarawa Balewa (North East), Dr Yakubu Shendam (sitting President NYCN), Oscar David Kalu (Southeast), Sola Oladeji (South West).

However, he stressed that Article 22 of the new constitution, warns against breach of provisions in the constitution stating that; “the NYCN shall have powers to discipline any member who commits the Offences outlined in the thereunder.”

Also, he maintained that the new constitution has barred any member or voluntary youth organisations from instituting or litigating on behalf of the council adding that only the BoT has been legally empowered to do so.

“The internal conflict resolution mechanism also demands that individuals or groups explore every internal Avenue as constitutionally prescribed to address all grievances before resorting to litigation.

“For the purpose of emphasis, Article 22.2 provides that aggrieved members shall report to appropriate an authority and if he/she is not satisfied, an appeal shall lie in the next higher NYCN authority to be determined within 21 days”

In this vein, he warned that the council will no longer accord recognition to any faction adding that a micro-interim committee would be set up to manage the affairs of the council pending the next meeting of the stakeholders.

This he said, is to allow for a credible Congress that will accommodate the interest of all its members.

He also suggested that waivers be granted to all factional presidents of the NYCN to enable them to contest in the council’s elections.

Akoh advised that if the resolutions are adopted, this would better reposition the Council.
