THE chances of Senator Iyiola Omisore, a candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), in the September 22 governorship election in Osun State, has further received a boost, as the leadership of the state’s National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has lauded his aspiration to be Osun State.
The Osun State chairman of the NURTW, Comrade Olamilekan Folorunso, welcoming Omisore to the union’s state secretariat on Wednesday, lauded his forthrightness, and interest in governing the state, saying, “it is a good thing to be willing to serve the people with an intention to better their lives, we wish you the best and pray God to grant you success.”
At the Wednesday meeting having in attendance NURTW leaders which include Comrade Taiwo Shittu, auditor, Comrade R. A. Adeyemi and financial secretary, Comrade Sunday Akinwale, the assistant secretary, Comrade Rauf Fakorede, speaking for the union had described Omisore as a lover of the people, especially NURTW members, who, he said had benefitted in his generosity as a senator in the state.
He said, “Omisore is a round peg in a round hole, he has contributed to developments in the state. As a senator, we felt his impact and he personally supported the union. Then, you increased our allocation from zero to 70 per cent as the appropriation committee chairman in the Senate. We also have our contributions to developments in the state, and this you have recognised with your coming today. Come September 22, we pray God will crown your efforts with victory.”
Fakorede also hinted that the NURTW parade members who “are among the economic leaders in the state,” and had 75 functional branches in Osun State, and would be ready to mobile its members to play their role in the coming election for onward development of the state.
Reacting, Omisore lauded the NURTW leaders for a warm reception accorded him, and while lauding their contributions to transport business in the state, charged them not to relent, but to recognise the importance of the September 22 election, and ensure they fully participate in it by mobilising their members, admonishing that “no government can succeed without partnering with the NURTW, and its members being involved in relevant activities in the state.”
“Why you have to be involved is also because you are a stakeholder in the state parading members who have families, you have wives, children and relations, and the truth is, God allows rain to fall on the good and bad people, so, if you allow a bad government to emerge, every category of people will be locked in its hardship. As a people, we all need basic things of life, and we need money to accomplish these, but if a government is bad, life becomes difficult for all and sundry.
“As we are currently witnessing in the state, the roads are bad, there are no drugs in our hospitals, patients are dying daily, our children can’t enjoy good education, and the dilemma of this is that in every four-year that we have an opportunity to change a government as it is now the time, if we get it wrong, one day struggle will turn to another eight years of hardship,” Omisore said.

While congratulating the state chairman, Folorunso, on his recent promotion as the zonal chairman, south-west of NURTW, Omisore said, his emergence as the state governor would see to his further promotion into the office of deputy national chairman of the union, as he also charged the union leaders to ignore “those who are ready to buy their ways in,” promising to make the roads motorable as a governor, adding that, “bad roads affect the lifespan of a vehicle, hence, the reason he said Osun roads must be put in good shape.
According to him, importation of second-hand vehicles was not ideal, but “we import Tokunbo cars to Nigeria after three years of usage, or more, and they are still in good condition, just because of their good roads. This we will replicate in Osun State if you support SDP to emerge victorious in the September 22 election,” Omisore said.
Omisore after presenting the SDP manifestos to the NURTW chairman, he promised to fulfill his campaign promises since according to him, a manifesto “is an agreement a candidate and his party signed with the people,” hence, he charged the union leaders that “whoever comes to you, ask for their manifestos, you know politics is a game of competition. Manifestos are the agreement between you and politicians, without that, you can’t hold them responsible for not working.”
