THE National Universities Commission (NUC) says it has unbundled Mass Communication into seven separate degree programmes to meet present demands.
This move, according to the commission, takes effect from 2020 admissions into Nigerian universities.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, NUC’s executive secretary, Professor Abubakar Rasheed, noted that the course had been unbundled into Journalism and Media Studies, Public Relations, Advertising, Broadcasting, Film and Multi-Media Studies, Development Communication Studies and Information and Media Studies.
It will be recalled that professors, professionals and practitioners of communication in Nigeria had earlier presented new communication curricula to the NUC, seeking the unbundling of mass communication into seven departments.
The approval of the curriculum had resulted in the emergence of seven degree-awarding programmes and the phasing out of the single BSc/BA degree programme in Mass Communication currently offered in different universities in the country.
