NSCDC parades army impersonator, seven others

THE Kogi State command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on Monday said it had arrested a car smuggler operating on Nigeria-Benin Republic border, Bartholomew Paul, over impersonation as an Army officer.

Apart from Paul, the command also paraded seven other suspects over alleged vandalisation of electric cables and Illegal possession of arms.

The state commandant, NSCDC, Everitus Obiyo, while parading the suspects at headquarters of the command in Lokoja, the state capital, said Paul was arrested by the men of the Nigerian Army at a checkpoint in Ayere, Ijumu local government area of the state.

He said the suspects were arrested with a Lexus RX300 SUV, full military uniform, two passport photographs, dependant military identity cards.

He alleged that the accused had been using the military uniforms and the identity card to pose as an army officer before he was eventually caught.

Obiyo also said three suspects, Hafiz Umar, Faruk Ibrahim and Oseni Yau, were arrested over an allegation of vandalism and illegal dealing on telecommunication underground cable and destruction of the road.

He said the people were apprehended in Ijumu local government with vandalised cable, voice copper wire was recovered from them.

He added that two other suspects Adama Asuba and Gideon Isaac were arrested for vandalism of and illegal dealing on transformer armoured cable.

Speaking on his arrest, Paul said he got the army trousers, a pair of boots and cap from his friend, Sani Bello, who is a sergeant in the Nigerian Army, while the army overall wear belonged to his late father, who was also an army officer.

He said he was driving to Ondo state when he was arrested with a tinted glass vehicle when the army at a checkpoint in Ayere stopped him and searched the vehicle following which the army uniforms were discovered.

He said he was a car smuggler that help people to who import tokunbo cars into the country through Cotonuo border while pretending to be an army officer.
