The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, has ordered his officers and men to crack down on criminals vandalising public infrastructure, including crash barriers being mounted across the metropolis by the FCT Administration.
He said his officers remain determined to flush out vandals from the city centre through renewed, intensified surveillance and 24-hour patrols.
Odumosu, in a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Monica Ojobi, on Thursday in Abuja, categorically warned vandals in the FCT to steer clear of the crash barriers being installed across the city centre.
He emphasised that the crash barriers were not just for beautification, but for the protection of lives of road users across the city, and vowed to do everything possible to ensure their safety.
He noted that, as the lead agency saddled with the responsibility of protecting critical national assets and infrastructure in the FCT, NSCDC personnel are intensifying their 24-hour patrol strategies to protect the crash barriers and other national assets such as manhole covers, streetlight poles, armoured cables, bridge enforcement aluminum, telecommunications equipment, water pipes, and electrical cables, among others.
The FCT Commandant issued a stern warning to the leadership of pantaker markets across the FCT, directing them to ensure that none of these items are found or sold in their markets, or risk complete shutdown.
He charged those overseeing the markets to adhere strictly to the approved guidelines handed over to them by the FCT Security Council during the last profiling of the markets, stressing that monitoring and regulation are still being enforced.
Commandant Odumosu advised all heads of pantaker markets to warn their members not to violate laid-down rules or be prepared to face the prescribed sanctions.
