The Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, Dr Olusola Odumosu, has reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to foster safer roads in the Capital Territory.
Commandant Odumosu made this known when he received in audience the new Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), FCT Command, Felix Theman, in his office at Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, on a courtesy visit.
In spite of the good network of roads in the FCT, the nation’s capital city is listed by the FRSC as one of the cities in Nigeria with the highest number of road traffic accidents due to dangerous driving and road rage.
It is in a bid to address this menace that the Corps is seeking more collaboration with the FRSC to restore sanity to the roads, thereby reducing the high rate of crashes in the FCT.
Speaking, NSCDC Commandant, Dr Odumosu, said the Sector Commander’s visit to the Command is a significant move to reinforce the already existing relationship between the two agencies, who have had a long history of synergy and collaboration.
He assured the FRSC boss that the FCT Command of the Corps would continue to support them in their efforts towards achieving a safe driving culture and preventing road crashes in the territory.
“Security and safety of all FCT residents is our priority, and we will continue to support and synergise with other relevant agencies of government saddled with these responsibilities.
“Let me assure you that we will be your support system, ready at all times to work with your men on the field in preventing harassment or attacks on them by deviants and recalcitrant road users,” Odumosu stated.
The Commandant added that life is very sacrosanct and the prevention of road crashes should not be left in the hands of the FRSC alone, but that all Nigerians and other security agencies must be involved in the campaign towards improving the driving culture in the FCT.
“As road users, we must all contribute significantly towards maintaining law and order on our roads to prevent road crashes in order to save lives and protect our road infrastructure,” the Commandant said.
Acting Public Relations Officer, NSCDC FCT Command, Monica Ojobi, in a statement on Friday, said that in his remarks, the Sector Commander, Felix Theman, lauded the visible and impactful landmark achievements recorded by the FCT Commandant since his assumption of office in the FCT.
He commended him for being the first to lead the bold initiative of inclusive security for all citizens and residents of the territory, which he is willing to emulate for enhanced service delivery to the vulnerable and physically challenged in society.
He disclosed that the FRSC has launched “Operation Restore Sanity” in the FCT to end the risk of one-way driving in different parts of the FCT, especially traffic-congested areas. He, however, stated that to restore order and ensure the success of this operation, the FRSC would need the support of the NSCDC.
He assured the Commandant of the FRSC’s commitment towards sustaining the robust relationship between the two agencies and promised to escalate it down to the lowest rung of the ladder to prevent misunderstanding or rivalry amongst personnel.
The high point of the visit was the presentation of a plaque to the Sector Commander by the FCT Commandant.
