NPHCDA revitalises 901 PHCs across Nigeria

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has disclosed that it has revitalized no fewer than 901 primary healthcare centres (PHCs) across Nigeria.

The Executive Director of NPHCDA, Dr. Muyi Aina, while briefing the media at the 2025 first quarter press conference, disclosed this, adding that the significant milestone is part of the agency’s broader strategy to strengthen Nigeria’s primary healthcare system.

He said, “We have introduced a live dashboard that tracks our progress, and Nigerians can see the evidence themselves. Anybody can click and see the state of the PHCs.

“The revitalization effort is aimed at improving financial and program management of funds, increasing access to healthcare services, and training more health workers.

“The agency has also trained 60,470 frontline health workers across 36 states and the FCT, out of a target of 120,000 in four years.”

“To further support the healthcare system, the NPHCDA has increased funding for primary healthcare facilities.”

“In 2024, the agency disbursed N22 billion to states through the NPHCDA gateway, while N51 billion was disbursed across all four BHCPF gateways. This funding will help facilities provide better services to patients.”

“The agency is also working to improve the management of healthcare finances through a new PHC financial management app. The app, which has been piloted in four states, will help facilities automate their business plan development, records keeping, and reporting.”

“The NPHCDA’s efforts are showing promising results, with many PHCs reporting an increase in patient attendance and a reduction in referrals to secondary and tertiary healthcare facilities.

Aina added that the agency’s work is critical to achieving the government’s goal of increasing access to healthcare services for all Nigerians.

“The agency’s focus on primary healthcare is also aligned with the government’s efforts to reduce maternal mortality.

“Nigeria has historically had a high maternal mortality rate, and the NPHCDA is working to address this challenge through initiatives like the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII).”
