The Concerned North East Youths Coalition has cautioned young people in the region against embarking on protests, urging them instead to engage in constructive dialogue with the government and private sector.
The chairman of the coalition, Aliyu Mohammed, made the call in a statement issued in Maiduguri on Wednesday, explaining that protests alone would not address the myriad challenges facing the region.
Mohammed tasked the federal government with prioritising critical infrastructure development, including the Mabila Hydropower Station and the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri rail line, as well as tackling the lingering security challenges in the region.
He said, “We cannot continue to protest without engaging the government and private sectors. We propose to collaborate with them to implement youth training programmes in agriculture and digital skills, promote self-reliance, and promote economic stability among young people.”
The coalition chairman also advised young people in the region to shun negative influences, prioritise their studies, and acquire relevant skills, particularly in the digital domain.
He commended President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for their efforts in addressing the nation’s challenges, as well as the North East Governors Forum and the North East Development Commission for their commitment to promoting development and restoring peace in the region.
The call comes as the region grapples with insecurity, poverty, and unemployment, among other challenges.
