A non-profit organisation, Global Emerging Pathogens Treatment Consortium (GET), has inaugurated 50 student ambassadors and 10 mentors from five secondary schools in Abeokuta during the launch of the Ogun state chapter of the GET One Health School Project (GHSP).
GET One Health School Project is a project that focuses on introducing the concept of one health and biosecurity to students of secondary schools across Nigeria.
According to the Project Officer at GET Consortium, who is also the project coordinator of GHSP, Mrs Ifeoluwa Alabi, the concept of One Health describes the interconnection of human health, animal health, plant health and the shared environment, adding that biosecurity focuses on the best practices to protect valuable biological materials from being stolen, misuse/abuse or intentionally released.
“The Ogun State Chapter of GHSP was launched under the approval of the Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, while the inauguration of GHSP Ogun state took place in one of the halls at the Lisabi Grammar School, Abeokuta on Friday, July 7, 2023.
“Some of the activities carried out at the event include capacity building session on one health and biosecurity for the students and teachers present; official inauguration of the One Health School ambassadors and mentors, and the free distribution of copies of GET One Health Textbook.
GET One Health ambassadors and mentors inaugurated are from selected five secondary schools in Abeokuta, which include: Abeokuta Grammar School, Idi-Aba, Lisabi Grammar School, Idi-Aba, African Church Grammar School, Ita Iya Olode, Government Science and Technical College, Idi-Aba, and St. Peter’s College, Olomoore. Each selected school nominated ten students-(5boys and 5girls) from S.S.1 and S.S.2 to represent the school at the inauguration.
The One Health School ambassadors and mentors will be subsequently trained and are expected to serve as One Health leaders in their respective schools and communities at large.
Present at the programme are representatives from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, teachers, students and GET Staff.
