Concerned by the recent wave of deaths that has shaken the gospel music community, veteran and contemporary gospel ministers recently converged for a solemn three-day prayer summit aimed at seeking divine intervention and protection for practitioners in the industry.
The gathering followed a series of painful losses that have cast a shadow over the gospel music ministry in recent times. Among the most recent are Bunmi Akinnaanu, Taiwo Adegbodu, and veteran minister Toun Soetan, whose deaths in 2026 have deeply shaken colleagues, fans, and the wider Christian community.
The unsettling development has sparked conversations within the Nigerian gospel music fold about the spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being of ministers who dedicate their lives to spreading the gospel through music.
Moved by the tragic incidents, concerned veterans and notable gospel musicians resolved to seek the face of God through a united prayer effort, asking for divine mercy, protection, and renewed strength for those actively involved in the ministry.
The three-day prayer summit was held at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Gate of Heaven Parish, Zonal Headquarters, RCCG Camp, where gospel ministers gathered for intense sessions of prayer, worship, and spiritual exhortation.
Leading participants in fervent intercessory prayers throughout the summit were respected gospel music veterans, including Pastor Idowu Animasaun, Pastor Joseph Adelakun, Pastor Ojo Ade, Timi Orokoya, Mama Bola Are, and Mama Funmi Aragbaye.
The event was also well attended by other notable gospel ministers, such as Esther Igbekele, Yetunde Are, Bola Discovery, BBO, Bose Super, Olayimika Babs, Mrs Adegbite, alongside several emerging and upcoming gospel ministers who joined the gathering with deep spiritual commitment.

Throughout the summit, participants engaged in passionate prayers against untimely death and other challenges confronting gospel ministers. The sessions also provided a platform for reflection and enlightenment, as speakers urged gospel artistes to pay closer attention to their health and personal well-being.
Participants were encouraged to prioritise regular medical check-ups, adequate rest, and proper health precautions, stressing that while spiritual devotion is central to ministry, physical well-being remains equally important.
According to Esther Igbekele, the prayer summit was essential as it brought gospel ministers together to seek the face of God and intercede for the industry.
“It is disheartening to witness the loss of great gospel ministers. We have not recovered from the shock, and we cannot afford to lose anyone further. This is why we answered the call to this prayer summit. We declare no more untimely death among us, and we are confident that God has answered our prayers,” she said.
Joseph Adelakun, who spearheaded the initiative, noted that he was led by the Spirit to organise the summit and expressed satisfaction with the turnout.
“It is sad that the gospel ministry is faced with such challenges. As veterans, we are grieved to see the younger generation leaving before us. This is why I did not hesitate to reach out, and we are confident that God has answered our supplications,” he added.
The summit ended on a hopeful note, with ministers expressing confidence that the prayers offered would usher in a season of protection, longevity, and renewed strength for gospel ministers across the country.
For many who attended, the gathering was more than a prayer meeting, it was a powerful reminder that unity, prayer, and wisdom remain essential for sustaining the voices that continue to proclaim the gospel through music.
