Three members of the Taraba State House of Assembly, representing the opposition parties; New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), joined the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday.
This defection has increased the PDP’s strength in the Assembly to 16 members, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) holds eight seats.
Hon. Umar Adamu, who represents the Jalingo 1 State Constituency, and Zakari Sanusi from Ibi Constituency both left the NNPP, while Hon. Anas Shaibu, representing the Karim 2 Constituency, defected from the APGA.
In their individual letters, the lawmakers stated that their decision was made after extensive consultations with their constituents.
They cited the performance and leadership style of Governor Agbu Kefas as significant factors in their choice, expressing a desire to align with the PDP to better serve their communities and contribute to the state’s development.
During the plenary session, the defected members reiterated that their decision followed thorough consultations with stakeholders, political associates, and constituents.
The Speaker of the House, John Bonzina, welcomed the defectors and assured them of full support from the PDP and the Assembly, emphasizing the importance of unity and collaboration for the benefit of the state.
While reading the lawmakers’ letters of defection on the floor of the House, Bonzina explained that this development reflects the members’ desire to contribute to the transformational efforts of Governor Kefas in Taraba State.
