The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, has upheld the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited’s (NNPC Ltd) appeal against the Federal High Court’s April 2023 judgment, which annulled the removal of Senator Ifeanyi Araraume as Non-Executive Chairman of the NNPC Board and awarded him ₦5 billion in damages.
A statement signed by the national oil company and dated 13 August 2025 said the judgment spared NNPC Ltd a potentially huge financial payout and removed a legal risk that could have invalidated all decisions of the Board since 2021.

“The Appeal Court agreed with NNPC Ltd’s position that the Federal High Court’s earlier decision was delivered in error, noting, among other things, that the claim was statute-barred.
“This decision of the Court of Appeal secures governance stability for NNPC Ltd, sets a corporate governance precedent in Nigerian law, and upholds the validity of Board resolutions critical to the oil and gas industry’s investment and policy direction,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has released a report showing a substantial decline in fuel consumption in June 2025 — down by 290 million litres compared to May.
The Director of Public Affairs, NMDPRA, George Ene-Ita, confirmed this on Wednesday, stating that daily fuel consumption averaged 48 million litres, contrary to earlier reports in some sections of the media that put it at 38.94 million litres.
The total fuel evacuation for June stood at 1,440,768,129 litres, representing a 16.42 per cent decrease compared to May’s total supply of 1,768,812,804 litres — a drop of over 290 million litres.
According to Ene-Ita, the figure represents a daily average evacuation of 48,025,604 litres, obtained by dividing the total monthly volume by the 30 days in the month under review.
Breaking down the figures, the NMDPRA report stated that the supply of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), otherwise known as diesel, increased slightly by 1.73 per cent to 432.18 million litres in June, compared to May’s 424.83 million litres.
However, diesel distribution (truck-out) declined by 23.23 per cent, falling from 552.35 million litres in May to 424.06 million litres in June. Household Kerosene (HHK) supply and distribution both recorded a 13 per cent decrease, with June figures at 7.79 million litres, down from nearly nine million litres in May.
The most significant drop was in automotive gasoline supply, which fell by nearly 48 per cent from 72.36 million litres in May to 37.66 million litres in June, while distribution declined by 16.54 per cent in the same period.
The report, which detailed fuel truck-out volumes to individual states totalling 1.44 billion litres evacuated in June, showed Lagos receiving the highest volume at 205.66 million litres, followed by Ogun with 88.69 million litres, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with 77.51 million litres, and Oyo with 72.81 million litres.
The NMDPRA pledged to work with relevant stakeholders to improve distribution and assured the public of uninterrupted petroleum product supply across Nigeria.
