The National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended Justice Kudirat Motonmori Kekere-Ekun to President Bola Tinubu for appointment as the next Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), succeeding Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who is set to retire on August 22.

In a statement released on Thursday by the NJC’s Director of Information, Mr. Soji Oye, the Council made the recommendation during its 106th meeting, which was presided over by the outgoing CJN, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, on August 14 and 15, 2024, in Abuja.

Justice Ariwoola will officially step down as CJN on Thursday, August 22, 2024.

The Council also recommended 27 candidates for appointment as Judges of State Courts and one candidate for appointment as Kadi of the Sharia Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. These recommendations have been forwarded to the respective State Governors and the President.

According to the statement, the following individuals were recommended for appointment as Judges of the High Court of Kwara State; Olawoyin Ibijoke Olabisi,  Abdulrazaq Fatimah Funsho, Folorunsho Oba Muritala, Dikko Yusuf Adebayo, Adeniyi Oluwatosin Adenike and Osuolale-Ajayi Temitope Olalekan.

Zubairu Murtala Ja’afaru was recommended as a Judge of the High Court of Kaduna State, while the following individuals were recommended as Judges of the High Court of Benue State; Kor Vincent Tersoo, Ikwulono Maigida Maimuna, Adagba, Nguhemen Julie and Tor Damian Tersugh

Additionally, two individuals were appointed as Judges of the Customary Court of Appeal of Benue State; Onche Ogah Inalegwu and Igba, Theophilus Terhile

The following individuals were recommended as Judges of the High Court of Rivers State; Onyiri Frank, Ugoji Victor Chinedum, Obomanu, Godswill Vidal, Oguguo Rita Chituru, Fubara Alatuwo Elkanah, Kokpan Bariyima Sylvester, Obu Ibietela Innocent Madighi and Wifa-Adedipe Lesi.

The following individuals were appointed as Judges of the High Court of Ondo State:

Daomi, Williams Adebisi Fabuluje, Adewumi William, Ogunwumiju Mobayonle, Idowu Demehin-Ogunbayo, Inumidun Happiness, Kpemi Ojufisintei Justinah and Adegoroye Olufunke Areola.

The Council also recommended Muhammad Lawal Munir as Kadi of the Sharia Court of Appeal of the FCT, Abuja.

Mr. Oye noted that all the recommended candidates are expected to be sworn in after their appointments are approved by the President and their respective State Governors.
