The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) has shown its readiness to improve the Department of Quantity Surveying at the University of Ibadan.
NIQS President, Olayemi Shonubi, who led other executives of NIQS to the office of the new Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor K.O. Adebowale, on Monday, made the pledge.
Shonubi said that the VC can always count on the body to support his administration in any way that is required.
According to him, NIQS wants to offer her support in ensuring the success of his tenure most especially in the area of increasing academic programmes available within the institution.
Shonubi lauded the management of UI as well as the governing council for approving the setting up of the Department of Quantity Surveying in the institution following its earlier appeal.
He disclosed that NIQS is willing and ready to recommend as well as provide professionally competent persons as Adjunct Lecturers, should the VC wants this kind of assistance.

“We seek your urgent intervention in ensuring that the Department of Quantity Surveying commences full academic activities from the next session. In this regard, we are willing to support the University [UI] towards achieving this.
“We are indeed very grateful for the establishment of the Department of Quantity Surveying as it will afford the teeming youth, particularly within your catchment area in the South-West geo-political zone, who are interested in pursuing a career in Quantity Surveying, an opportunity to achieve their dreams.
“We have, however, observed with deep consternation that even though the Department of Quantity Surveying was created with others such as Estate Management: Urban and Regional Planning and Architecture in the Faculty of Environmental Design and Management in 2018, it is yet to effectively take off.
“While the Department exists on paper with two academic staff members, it has not been able to admit any student since its establishment. We understand that the main impediment to the take-off is the lack of sufficient academic staff in the department that will enable the University to invite the NUC for Resource Verification prior to commencement of academic activities.
In his remarks, Professor Adebowale said the Faculty of Environmental Design and Management are quite new and they have been established before them.
“The number of staff members that we have is not enough and we don’t have students yet in that department. So NIQS will be able to assist us in terms of getting ad-hoc staff that will be able to assist in that department.
“Apart from that, because NIQS is a professional body, it would assist us on professional accreditation of the courses too.”
